چکیده

Gesturing is an important activity in social interaction, but how will different types of robot gesture be interpreted by people? Understanding how humans interpret robot gestures will aid design of effective social robots. We examine the generation and interpretation of gestures in a simple social robot capable of head and arm movement using two studies. In the first study, four participants created gestures with corresponding messages and emotions based on 12 different scenarios provided to them. The resulting gestures were then shown in the second study to 12 participants who rated gesture lifelikeness as well as judging which emotions and messages were being conveyed. Knowledge (present or absent) of the motivating scenario (context) for each gesture was manipulated as an experimental factor. Context was found to assist message understanding while providing only modest assistance to emotion recognition. The gestures participants created varied in movement complexity, and lifelikeness was found to be related to the number of arm movements (but not head movements) in a gesture. While better than chance, both emotion (22%) and message understanding (40%) accuracies were relatively low. The results obtained are discussed in terms of implied guidelines for designing gestures for social robots.

Mobile Robotic Toys and Autism

To help children with autism develop social skills, we are investigating the use of mobile robotic toys that can move autonomously in the environment and interact in various manners (vocal messages, music, visual cues, movement, etc.), in a more predictable and less intimidating way. These interactions are designed to build up their self-esteem by reinforcing what they do well. We report tests ...

Mechatronic Hand Design with Integrated Mechanism in Palm for Efficiency Improve of the Finger.

One of the most important case in humanoid robot designing is hand, which it consider as an country development. High percentage of robot work quality depend on hand capability. This case has more effect intake of special objects such as round shape or moving...

A New Solution for the Cyclic Multiple-Part Type Three-Machine Robotic Cell Problem based on the Particle Swarm Meta-heuristic

In this paper, we develop a new mathematical model for a cyclic multiple-part type threemachine robotic cell problem. In this robotic cell a robot is used for material handling. The objective is finding a part sequence to minimize the cycle time (i.e.; maximize the throughput) with assumption of known robot movement. The developed model is based on Petri nets and provides a new method to calcul...

Robot Learning and Self-Sufficiency: What the Energy-Level Can Tell Us about a Robot's Performance

Electrical energy is an important factor for a robotic agent when it tries to stay autonomously operational for some time. Monitoring this variable can provide important feedback for learning. In this paper, we present two diierent learning criteria based on this idea. Dealing with self-suucient agents, i.e., agents that roughly speaking have a job to do, one criterion works over cycles of iter...

Evolving robot control using artificial neuroendocrine systems

I first describe the background to the problem: why robotic control systems sometimes need to adapt to changes in their environments rather than wait for a human to tell them what to do next. I discuss how this might be done in a “traditional” control system, before explaining why it’s often better for them to adapt themselves rather then be programmed to do so, and trying to describe what that...
